It is the first question everyone asks, and most tools in this category are careful not to answer it directly. So: no. Nothing available today can tell you what your child's face will be. Not this tool, not any of the others, and not a doctor with your full family history in front of them.

That sounds like a strange thing to lead with on a site that sells baby portraits. But the answer people are actually looking for is more interesting than a yes, and knowing what you are looking at makes the picture better, not worse.

What the tool is actually doing

When you upload two photos, the generator reads each face the way a portrait artist would — feature by feature. The set of the eyes, the width of the nose base, the shape of the mouth, the line of the jaw. It then composes a new face from what it found in both, and rebuilds it at infant proportions, which is its own problem: babies are not small adults, and the proportions that make a face read as a baby are quite specific.

What it is not doing is running your genetics. There is no inheritance model under the hood, because there is no such thing to put there. The picture is a composition, not a calculation.

Why prediction is a different problem entirely

Face shape is not one gene with a dominant and a recessive version, the way the classroom diagrams suggest. It is the combined effect of a very large number of genes, most of which contribute a little, interacting with each other and with the ordinary randomness of development. Eye colour alone — the textbook example of simple inheritance — is now understood to involve many genes, which is why two brown-eyed parents can and regularly do have a blue-eyed child.

The clearest everyday evidence is siblings. Full siblings get their genes from exactly the same two people, in the same way, and they still come out looking like different individuals. If parentage determined a face, every brother and sister pair would be near-identical. They are not. The only case that comes close is identical twins, and that is because they are copies of each other, not because anyone predicted them.

So a tool that promised you a specific outcome would be promising something the underlying biology does not offer. Anything claiming otherwise is either misunderstanding the problem or selling you certainty it does not have.

What the picture is actually good for

Take it as what it is: a plausible face built out of two real ones. That is a genuinely nice thing to have. It is a conversation between two people about a person who does not exist yet, and the fun of it is precisely that it is not binding.

Couples tend to use it the same handful of ways — an announcement, a gift, something to send to family, something to sit on a phone background for a while. None of those need it to be right. They need it to be lovely and to feel like the two of you.

How to read what comes back

A few things worth knowing when you look at your result:

  • Look at features, not the whole face. The parts that carry recognisably — eye shape, the mouth, the general face shape — are where you will see yourselves. Judging the composite as a single verdict on "who it looks like" will just frustrate you.
  • The nose will not tell you much. A newborn's nose bridge is barely developed. In real life this is the feature that takes years to declare itself, and the same is true here.
  • Generate more than once. Different runs give different plausible faces, and the spread between them is a fair illustration of the actual point of this article. If one run were the answer, they would all look the same.
  • The older age styles show more. Baby fat hides bone structure. If you want to see whose jaw or cheekbones came through, the child and teenager styles are more revealing than the newborn one.
